At Riverside Millwork Group, we believe great millwork does more than fill a space—it shapes the experience within it. That belief came to life during our recent project at the newly renovated Sherwood Forest Public Library in London, Ontario. We were asked to design and build a set of architectural features that would be both functional and visually striking.

A Unique Design That Elevates the Space
At the heart of this project are three suspended circular structures. The design team often referred to them as “nests.” These sculptural features hang from the ceiling around large circular light fixtures. While they serve a decorative purpose, they also act like modern corbels—blending form and function to support and enhance the space’s architectural flow.

Craftsmanship in Every Curve
Each nest was built using stain-grade poplar, a hardwood known for its clean grain and ability to take stain evenly. Our team carefully machined and assembled every component to meet exact dimensions. This precision ensured a consistent look across all three installations.

Each structure includes two support rings. These rings were engineered to hold the vertical arch blades that create the outer edge of each nest. Every blade was individually cut and aligned to create a strong, rhythmic design.

From afar, the effect is subtle and organic—like floating wooden halos that soften the room’s geometry and draw the eye upward. Up close, the detail becomes even more impressive. The craftsmanship shines through in every curve and connection

Finishing Touches That Set the Tone
To match the library’s warm, modern interior, each nest received a custom-tinted stain along with a clear protective coat. Both were tailored to the client’s specifications. The result is a finish that brings out the natural beauty of the wood while providing long-lasting protection—especially important in a busy public space.

A Collaborative Installation
Installing suspended architectural features takes planning and precision. Our team worked closely with the on-site crew to handle lifting, placement, and secure mounting. Every detail was coordinated to ensure a safe and seamless installation.
What looks effortless from the ground is actually the result of detailed collaboration between design, fabrication, and installation teams. That coordination is something we take great pride in.

A Project That Reflects What We Love Most
Projects like this are exactly why we love what we do. They challenge our creativity, push our skills, and allow us to collaborate with amazing partners. From the first sketch to the final install, the custom nests at Sherwood Forest Public Library reflect the kind of thoughtful, high-quality millwork that defines our work. Whether it’s a public space, a custom home, or anything in between, we’re always ready to help turn bold ideas into beautiful realities.
